The Dirty Business of Cleansers

With so many cleansers on the market today I can understand how confusing it is deciding which one to choose.

We're here to help make you feel confident about purchasing your next cleanser.

Firstly, let's just dive into a little skin science (promise it's not too long)!

The sole purpose of cleansers are designed to remove make up, surface grime and environmental pollutants while maintaining a healthy 'natural acid mantle' otherwise known as your skin's 'protective barrier'.

A balanced acid mantle has a pH of around 5.5 which means soft, smooth and supple skin and allows your skin's natural barrier to fight off and keep out bacteria, viruses and other pollutants.

So reaching for the soap and water only to feel your skin tighten up, dry out or even get irritated, it's because the pH is way too alkaline - water has a neutral pH of 7 and traditional soaps have a pH 9 to 11.

Another way of unbalancing your skin's acid mantle is using harsh, cheap cleansers with ingredients like SLS/SLES -  this can leave your skin prone to acne, dryness, irritation and sensitivities.  And sadly, if you read the ingredients on the liquid soap in the bathroom it really isn't unlike what's in some facial cleansers on the market today.

Okay then, lets look at expensive cleansers - surely these are better? Mmmm, yes and no. It's hard not be impressed with all the ingredients being promoted but just be mindful that cleansers are a wash off product and will only be left on your skin for around 30 seconds - sorry but it's just not enough time for any active ingredient to do it's magic.  So paying top dollar for a cleanser with all the bells and whistles probably isn't the best buy - I would suggest you invest your hard earned money on a quality serum and moisturiser with active ingredients instead.
